GeoEye offers to buy DigitalGlobe.

GeoEye, a commercial satellite imagery company, offered to buy its rival, DigitalGlobe, for $792 mln.
GeoEye and DigitalGlobe are the only two companies that provive satellite imagery to US military and intelligence agencies. The companies also provide satellite imagery to companies like Google for its Google Maps technology, and navigation device manufacturers, like Garmin.

The competition among providers of global satellite navigational systems is continuously stiffening. Gone are the days when GPS was the only global navigation satellite system. Russian GLONASS system has been operational for a while now, and recently have been incorporated into new products from major manufacturers. Apple’s iPhone 4s boasts GLONASS support, and so do latest offerings from Garmin, like eTrex. Chinese Compass system is already operational in China, and is planned to have global coverage by 2020.
