Atlanta Falcons are latest NFL team to use GPS to track practice

by GPS4US 2013-08-07 15:24

Add the Atlanta Falcons to the list of NFL teams using GPS technology to track their players’ conditioning levels.

The Falcons recently signed with an Australian company to get the technology, which is also being used by the Buffalo Bills and six other NFL teams to monitor injury and movement.

The GPS tracking is already paying off, as the Falcons reportedly used it to decide to pull star wide receiver Julio Jones from practice Monday. Jones will not play when the team opens its preseason slate against the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday.

The GPS trackers, which fit inside a pocket on the back of the player’s practice jersey, monitor how hard each player is working. It measures acceleration, deceleration, change of direction, speed and distance. Trainers use them to help prevent nagging injuries – and monitor existing ones – by controlling a player’s workload during practice
