Boeing keeping busy in the GPS game

by GPS4US 2013-08-27 16:30

Boeing may have lost their footing as the leader in GPS satellite development when Lockheed Martin won the bidding to build the GPS III system. However, the aeronautic giant isn’t just slinking off into the sunset.

Boeing insists it is continuing to invest in GPS products and technology to aid the US Department of Defense. And, though industry insiders saw losing the GPS III contract as a crushing blow, Boeing was awarded a smaller contract that will keep its development teams busy.

“That continues some GPS business and we believe we have a lot to offer there, and we’ll continue to make those investments,” said Craig Cooning, vice president of space and intelligence systems, reported by The Space News.

Cooning pointed to plenty of opportunities to improve GPS service. And, with recent concerns about GPS jamming by hackers, the door seems to be wide open for new technology.

Though Lockheed Martin is currently ahead in the industry, Boeing promises big things with its 702SP satellite program. The company said it has completed a design review for the project. Soon we’ll see if it represents a major shift in GPS technology.
