Cisco and VMware create new virtual rainbow over Clouds of Data Center networks

Seven Layers of OSI modelLike parcels are routed among different routes in the post office, the Layer-3 is responsible for routing packets (like post office parcels) delivery including routing through intermediate routing devices. This job is performed by Layer-3 of 7-Layer Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) standard network model. This model works fine in traditional networks. But Cloud Computing and Cloud Utility Services for Mobile Banking and other newest mobile user oriented architectures are requiring the intense use of virtual machines and virtual networks within the global Cloud Computing model. The traditional Level-3 of the OSI needs be adjusted within standardization framework to adopt for the new virtual computing and virtual networking approaches.

Computing and networking industry leaders put innovation forces together to to brainstorm the problem. VMware (NYSE:VMW) and Cisco (NASDAQ:CSCO) have teamed up to initiate, propose to the Internet Engineering Task Force and help maintain the industry collaboration of all leaders invited to take the virtual network architecture and configuration redesign for the test run on aggregated virtual operating system and networking platforms. The new virtual network configuration has to be automated and easily reconfigured by universal solution that allows for the virtual platforms and virtual networking equipment from different manufacturers to play together in the Cloud Computing Utility services mobile oriented realms. 

VMware always kept its positions at the cutting edge of virtual computing including operating systems,  virtual switching applications and virtual environment management tools, all proprietary. VMware created the virtual switch for early implementations of its "vSphere" stack model. Cisco Systems developed its own cloud networking aware proprietary, the "Nexus" virtual switch for network administrators who want to continue using the Cisco's famous Internetwork Operating System (IOS), the switch operating system which is dominating Cisco Systems network routers and switches, as well as giant world of installations across the high technology industries. The Cisco's Internetwork Operating System has accommodated numerous powerful administrator-friendly graphic user interfaces (GUI) and handful of related network management tools.

Cisco VMware joining forces with new VXLAN

The novel virtual networking Level-3 proposed by Cisco, Vmware and other visionaries of Cloud Computing applies the metaphor of divide and conquer happened earlier in the telephone networking world.  In the beginning of telephony over the wire each telephone's number was used to provide identity of the telephone device and the location where the telephone was physically located. Once the mobile phones, later smartphones and other personal communicator endpoints of the mobile telephone networks were introduced, the location of the telephone would move with the owner around the world. At the time large phone companies came up with the methodology and architecture of new location independent numbering for mobile phones. Besides the latest and greatest achievements in global positioning system (GPS) navigational technology coupled with precision pinpoint 3D topographic mapping location provider services quickly spread as the main positioning method for the mobile users. With virtual computing and networking the problem with an IP address on a local area network is similar in that the IP address it also used to represent both networking device identity and its location on the network.

The new born VXLAN architecture re-uses the cell phone networking rethinking of the mobile phone number, to encourage the separation of location and identity information associated with the Internet Protocol (IP) address. Traditionally the IP address is known as IP number assigned to each computing network aware device participating in a computer network. In the new virtual networking VXLAN model the Media Access Control address (or MAC address) as the unique identifier of the networking device and assigned to each network interface, or local area network card (LAN card)  for communications on the physical network segment is changing its traditional place. The VXLAN model suggests to encapsulate the MAC addresses inside of User Datagram Protocol (UDP ) as one of the core members of the Internet Protocol Suite.  This way Virtual machines could link to the abstracted Layer-2 in the OSI network model. Actually  the new VXLAN offers to turn the Layer-3 networks into so called hyper-visor for Layer-2 networks. 

The separation of Layer-2 and layer-3 duties will allow Virtual Machines inter-communicate over new VXLAN overlay scheme which is transparent still employing an existing physical networks stretching boundaries of OSI model's Layer-3. VXLAN innovation has way to go through critique, tune-up,  improvement and acceptance by the rest of the networking provider industry community. Working towards adoption of the new VXLAN virtual networking model across the industry of Cloud Computing Utility Services innovators, Cisco and VMware published initial draft of the proposed VXLAN specification with the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) to begin the compliance and standardization process.
