Cycling Computer

World technology leaders in the satellite navigation systems and smartphone platforms are working in the new direction of integrating the satellite technology with the sports and fitness power metering and sensor devices. Cycling computers are becoming more sophisticated by accommodating the whole suite of cloud computing services together with the personal trainer capabilities. The bicycle navigation and training system employ the GPS navigation, ANT+ and Bluetooth communicating technologies to accommodate various sensors array of information to monitor speed, distance, time, altitude, elevation, incline, decline, heart rate, power, derailleur setting, cadence, wind speed, path completed, expected future path, heart rate, power, and pace.

Vector pedal power meter technologyBy giving cyclists on rides access to all the information via the convenient user interface and rich sensor interface the cycling computer has to stay waterproof, rugged and durable at the same time incorporating the best of user interface features available on a more fragile smartphones. Additionally the cycling computer communicator subsystem should provide the way for the riders to wirelessly connect to each other within a team of cyclists so that they could freely talk to each other on-the-ride about course details, landmark information, race stats and sharing personal experience details about how well they are doing on the track. In case the cycling computer is using smartphone as the central processing and communication platform the system could utilize various sensors array through special adapters and suite of personal trainer software applications hosted by the smartphone.

Another way of solving the difficult task of advancing power-based cycling tools has been taken by Garmin engineers by connecting the Forerunner, Edge 800 and Edge 500 cycling computers with the new system built-into the bike itself, the Vector. Vector’s light weight and durable injected carbon fiber pedals are reliable and compatible with most bicycles, and its ANT+ wireless pedal pod transmitters fit most major cranksets. Vector has also been designed to be easy to update as software enhancements are made, thanks to its ANT+ wireless technology. Vector is designed with the power meter potential to make power-based training more accessible and usable by a broader range of athletes. Adding a Vector cycling power meter takes athlete training experience to the next level.

The novel biking computer adds a new interval summary page to enhance the power-based training experience and displays total power, left and right leg power, and cadence. It also renders in real-time the widely adopted power metrics from Training Peaks, Normalized Power, Intensity Factor and Training Stress Score parameters. The device is compact and easily finds its place next to the bell and safety lights. The next level of integration is to add an efficient voice interface which helps to easily converse with your riding partners. The Bluetooth technology has the capacity to connect bicycle communicators to let you talk to your fellow cyclists from more than a thousand feet away and also can be extended to use special software allowing placement of phone calls and listen to music via stereo earpiece and sensitive microphone.
