GPS fire hydrants take root in Mississippi

by GPS4US 2013-06-19 17:00
A pair of Mississippi fire departments recently began logging their fire hydrants on a GPS.

Tupelo and Saltillo are just the latest cities and townships to take advantage of GPS technology to help their first responders.

By logging their hydrants captains can, en route to a fire, locate the nearest hydrants to the burning structure, according the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal. From there, firefighters can plan their strategy for stifling the blaze.

“This way, if you’re going to a commercial structure fire, you know you need a lot more water and you can figure out how to lay lines to get the most water,” Tupelo fire chief Thomas Walker told the Hattiesburg American.

Tupelo and Saltillo join towns in Florida and Texas – among others – with GPS fire hydrants.
