GPS info could have cop in hot water for repeated speeding

by GPS4US 2013-10-16 14:58

It’s always interesting the myriad ways GPS can give us critical information to help keep us safe.

Take the case of a cop in Louisiana. The GPS tracker in his car has shown him speeding 727 times since he joined the force in December 2012. One of those instances resulted in an accident which left one woman injured. At the time of the accident, the officer was going over 100 miles per hour.

As more and more municipalities use GPS tracking to ensure proper procedure and safety protocol, we’re seeing more accountability from our public servants. Understandable, the citizens of Sorrento, La., are upset with  officer James Bell’s driving habits, especially when the officer has written more than 300 speeding tickets in the last two months alone.

GPS data shows that on the day of his crash, Bell’s vehicle was traveling 109 mph. Bell received a citation for that incident. He also received a citation when GPS caught his vehicle parked in a handicap spot.

“Yes he was wrong and he was reprimanded for it," said Sorrento Police Chief Earl Theroit.

Residents are up in arms, considering the seeming hypocrisy of a speeding cop regularly issuing speeding tickets.

Why isn't he issued a citation? How can he wrongfully issue civilians citations when he doesn't uphold the same law for himself?" said Joshua Irvine.

By the way, we don’t know what type of GPS units the Sorrento Police use in their cars, but we do know that we have the best car navigation systems on the market, including the wildly popular Garmin Nuvi.
