GPS investment pays off in Jersey snow storm

by GPS4US 2013-12-11 14:54

It’s pretty sweet when investments pay out.

Just ask the state of New Jersey.

After a heavy snowfall earlier this week, transportation planners had to figure out what to do when
some contractors didn’t show up to salt the roads.

But a 2011 $22 million investment in GPS technology in thousands of trucks and plows helped fix that.
The state’s Department of Transportation used their new GPS maps to determine the neglected areas, and
sent reserve teams to save the day.

The GPS units have the DOT running in harmony.

"We were operating in the blind sometimes," said Andrew Tunnard, executive director of operations for
the New Jersey DOT. "It's made a big positive impact on the way DOT operations operates."

On the day of the snowstorm, 550 trucks were salting roads before dawn. Another 1,500 private
contractors were plowing the powder. Meanwhile, New Jersey DOT officials watched the progress in real
time with GPS, monitoring projected paths and salt truck levels. They also monitored conditions, and
were able to order method changes on the fly.

Not a bad investment at all.
