GPS tagged egrets show zoologist a wild ride

by GPS4US 2014-03-18 15:19

We found another animal scientists are tracking with GPS.

So, we’ve told you about condors and wolves bison and a bunch of other animals that scientists are
learning more about thanks to GPS technology. But we haven’t told you about great egrets.

So, egrets are an awesome white bird that are all over the United States. Last year North Carolina
State University Zoologist Roland Kays teamed with the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and
partnering public schools to capture and tag eight egrets with GPS devices.

They learned a lot over that year. Mainly, that there’s no real rhyme or reasons to where egrets
migrate.

“The most amazing thing was that all the different birds we studied did something different,” Kays told
WRAL in North Carolina.

The best part of the story is one bird who hung out in New York and Massachusetts – where she breeded –
and then took off for a warmer climate.

“Here she is in Cuba,” Kays tells WRAL as if that makes more sense than anything he ever heard.

Kays and students from the partnering schools get daily updates on their egrets.

So..Yeah Science! And Yeah GPS!
