Garmin announces DownVü and SideVü addition to aid anglers

by GPS4US 2013-11-19 14:47

Garmin Monday announced DownVü and SideVü, down- and side-scanning sonar technology that gives users
high-resolution imagery and pinpoint precision while on the water with their boat.

The updates will be added to certain GPSMAP series units, and current owners can download the software
through Garmin’s website.

“Garmin is excited to bring scanning sonar to the market for our customers,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s
vice president of worldwide sales.  “For anglers of all types, it’s crucial to have a comprehensive
understanding of what is directly below and to the side of boat when out on the water.  Now, with
DownVü and SideVü, we provide that valuable insight on a large range of Garmin marine products.”

DownVü gives users a high-frequency sonar that shows a near-picture quality representation of
structures and fish beneath the boat. SideVü does the same for objects to the side of the boat.

Garmin also announced a new line of their echo and echoMAP fishfinders that support DownVü. The echoMAP
50dv and 70dv boast the same vibrant screens and capabilities as the previously released echoMAP series
but now add DownVü scanning technology. Users who have already purchases a GPSMAP 500 or 700 series
unit without DownVü can update their software through Garmin’s website. With a DownVü transducer the
GPSMAP will give users DownVü technology.

Garmin’s new GPSMAP 800 and 1000 series come with DownVü scanning sonar with CHIRP technology,
supporting both DownVü and SideVü.

Meanwhile, Garmin will also release the GCV 10 sonar black box, which brings the same CHIRP technology
users loved in the GSD 26 sounder box. The GCV 10, coupled with the SideVü and DownVü transducer, adds
SideVü and DownVü with CHIRP scanning sonar technology to compatible Garmin echoMAP and GPSMAP devices.
CHIRP sweeps a range of frequencies to provide noise suppression, more power on targets and target
separation, allowing the GCV 10 to give users crystal clear and near-picture quality images.

With DownVü and SideVü, anglers can use the high-frequency sonar to find the ideal fishing spots. The
software will be available before the end of 2013. The new echoMAP DownVü series and GCV 10 sounder
black box will be available in early 2014. For a full list of compatible units and for more
