Garmin announces updated automotive navigation devices at CES

by GPS4US 2014-01-09 14:44

Garmin Monday introduced three updates to their line of popular navigation products, including the nuvi
and the head-up display (HUD).

The company, based in Olathe, Kan., made the announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las
Vegas. The updates are sure to please Garmin enthusiasts.

““With our new lineup of navigation products, we offer our customers even more choices to upgrade their
vehicle with premium Garmin navigation,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales.
“From new nüvi models to a head-up display with free companion app, Garmin’s latest navigation devices
help drivers avoid delays, headaches, and potentially dangerous situations on the road.”

The nuvi 278LMT combines a 7-inch display with a wireless backup camera, giving drivers a rear view of
their surroundings. The camera is tough enough to withstand harsh weather, and can be professionally
mounted to show your surroundings every time you shift into reverse. The nuvi 2798LMT includes Garmin
Real Directions, free lifetime traffic and maps, active lane guidance and voice-activated navigation.

Meanwhile, the brand new 2014 Essential Series features the first nuvis with 6-inch dual orientation
displays. The Essential series is affordable – likely between $129.000 and 209.99, depending on the
model – and offers standalone navigation and turn-by-turn directions. Select models offer lifetime
traffic avoidance, school zone warnings and easily accessed points of interest.

The head-up display, released last year, gets a new partner with the HUD+, combining the original HUD
with a free companion smartphone app. The HUD was revolutionary in bringing windshield-projected
navigation to non-luxury cars. It projects turn-by-turn directions onto a transparent film on the
windshield, so drivers don’t have to take their eyes off the road to know where they’re going. HUD+
receives navigation information from your Bluetooth-connected smartphone.

All three products should be available in February.
