Hawaii adds GPS to transport students

by GPS4US 2013-07-26 13:35
If you live in Hawaii, GPS may help get your kids to school on time.

The state’s Department of Education will soon use routing software and GPS tracking for public school buses as they overhaul a transportation system that users believe is outdated and unsafe.

““We are completely transforming the way we procure, contract and operate a bus system the size of ours,” Ray L’Heureux, assistant superintendent for school facilities and support services, told the Nashua Telegraph.

After reviewing the transportation system, the state scolded education officials. The $72.4 million price of student transportation has nearly tripled in the last seven years. “Ineffective planning for bus services has resulted in routes that are not evaluated for cost, efficiency or adherence to safety guidelines,” the report found, according to the Nashua Telegraph. “Unsystematic oversight of bus service contracts has resulted in escalating costs and lack of accountability.”

GPS systems will help change that.

The department will use a GPS unit and individual student ID numbers to track where a student boards and exits the bus. The system was recently tested in Kona, Hawaii. “It was a huge success,” L’Heureux told the Nashua Telegraph. In the past, he said, “anybody could show up and get on a bus.”

The department will implement the plan in Oahu by the end of this year and the rest of the state next year.
