Russia’s GLONASS suffers mystery disruption; solar flares may affect communciation

by GPS4US 2014-04-03 09:45

Glonass, Russia’s GPS equivalent, way mysteriously disrupted on Tuesday around 5 p.m. Eastern time, and
the problem remains unknown.

Most of the 24 satellites that make up the system broadcast incorrect data about their locations.
Though GPS wasn’t affected, some GPS units – including select Garmin models use Glonass to improve

Areas likely to be affected would be urban canyons, or streets with high rise buildings.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, the sun emitted what is, according to NASA, a “significant” solar flare. The
flare may have had an effect on communications on earth Wednesday. While solar flares, which are bursts
of radiation on the sun, can’t break through the Earth’s atmosphere, they may affect GPS satellites.

So, lots of stuff going on up in space.
