Russia’s Glonass could be out in U.S.

by GPS4US 2013-12-30 16:16

The United States’ latest defense budget may halt Glonass, Russia’s version of GPS, the New York Times
reported.

The defense bill, signed into law Thursday, requires the U.S. secretary of defense and the director of
national intelligence provide a waiver ensuring all data transfers between Glonass land-based stations
are not encrypted, and certify they pose no threat to national security.

“The idea was to make it next to impossible, if not impossible, to do this," a House Republican aide
told the Times.

Glonass has found its way into the American GPS market. Garmin has incorporated it into several of its GPS models.
Last year Sony did the same. With GPS and Glonass combined, GPS units have greater
accuracy. One test found that Glonass and GPS combined can improve accuracy up to 50 percent.
