The United States Coast Guard Navigation Center new informational suite of services for the GPS users

US Coast GuardAs a service and point of information contact to to an increasing number of global GPS aware users, including military, civilian, and commercial GPS users and depending on the user's accessibility profile, the civilian GPS users now can receive a wider variety of GPS services which were not available before. The work done to help civilian GPS users receive richer suite of high quality GPS navigational services has led the coordinated effort under the supervision of the Global Positioning Systems Directorate, NAVSTAR, the US Air Force, Space and Missile Systems Center, Air Force Space Command Center and organizations involved in developing and producing GPS satellites, ground GPS systems and user equipment, has led to the new possibilities for civilian GPS users. The vital GPS information suite of services critical in many situations where health and safety of civilians are at stake is now available any time, any place. 

For the community of the civilian GPS users in the United States, the Department of Transportation of the United States has widen the role of the newly re-established, the former GPS Information Service, into the new Navigation Information Service. The Navigation Information Service is operated and was overseen by the United States Coast Guard. U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center (NAVCEN) is open for users with internet access who can easily locate the new NIS site as a special service at the United States Coast Guard Navigation Center (www.navcen.uscg.gov). The Global Positioning System suite of services is located within the Primary Mission Areas of the Coast Guard Navigation Center. 

The new vision of the navigation and information services, the GPS information services is to establish the Coast Guard Navigation Center as an authoritative source, under the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, for maritime navigation and information services. The vision is achieved by applying innovation, continuous improvement, and the Coast Guard's core values to always provide the right information to the right customer at the right time. The Coast Guard Navigation Center provides maritime navigation and information services that enhance the safety, security, and efficiency of U.S. waterways.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security established the U.S. Coast Guard Navigation Center as the visionary for NAVCEN Navigation Information Services to provide nationwide GPS augmentation signals, track vessel movements for enhanced situational awareness, publish maritime advisories and related navigation information, manage the Coast Guard's NAVCEN electronic chart and topographic map portfolio, receive and coordinate investigation of GPS outages. The U.S. global positioning system provides round the clock and round the world coordinate positioning, location and mapping service crucial for health and safety of civilians. It includes the very accurate 3D topographic mapping and  location information. Additionally the new suite of high quality NAVSTAR GPS navigational services provides the high precision velocity and atomic timing services.
