The nature of hiding geocaches

by GPS4US 2013-10-29 12:20

Geocaching is, of course, an outdoor hobby.

That’s why it’s so important to be at one with nature while you’re hiding or finding a cache.

Our friends over at have put together a checklist for hiding geocaches in environmentally-friendly places.

1.       Think before you hide: Be sure to get permission from the land manager to make sure you’re not interfering with wildlife.

2.       Share details on your page: Be sure to let fellow geocachers know the ins and outs of finding your cache. Give them parking information or local policies so they don’t go tearing up the place looking for your treasure.

3.       Place the geocache carefully: Be sure you’re not digging, chopping or burrowing when you hide your cache. Your goal is to be sure you don’t disturb the natural scenery. And you may want to place your cache close to an existing trail.

4.       Choose the appropriate container: Be sure your geocache container is waterproof, durable and the right size for the cache. Also, be sure your cache doesn’t have a scent that may lure animals.

5.       Work with your geocaching community volunteer: Make sure they know as much information as possible. They can give you placement or packaging advice.

6.       Don’t leave cache trash: You may find yourself without enough time to maintain your geocache. If so, ask a friend or fellow geocacher to adopt it.

You can read the entire entry here. And, if you’re looking to get into the geocaching game, or just want to update you equipment, we have everything you need right here.
