by atina 2010-03-21 18:00

This year, the Walmart Foundation has made a commitment to spend over $2 million to help the program “Meals on Wheels” Program nation wide starting with a grant for $8,191 awarded to the Alamance County Meals on Wheels (ACMOW).

Tom Tom and Walmart to Help Deliver Meals to the ElderlyACMOW delivers over 100,000 meals per year frail, disabled or homebound citizens of Alamance County. The funds from the newly received grant will be going towards new GPS devices to help volunteers deliver meals to the elderly.

Late last year, Meals on Wheels Association of America released a studying showing that six million seniors in America face the risk of hunger.

The staff has already bought 24 large-screen TomToms and has begun programming the routes. Volunteers should be able to use them beginning April 1.

“We’re real excited,” said Anne Baker, ACMOW executive director, “It should help the volunteers to deliver the routes faster.”

The grant given by The Walmart Foundation is intended to help the non-profit organization meet its long-term equipment needs

“The Walmart Foundation has once again stepped up to the plate as a powerful partner in the fight to end senior hunger,” said Enid Borden, president and CEO of MOWAA. “They are our largest corporate partner to date, and their support will make a tremendous impact in helping our programs sustain meal services well into the future.”
