Venice’s gondolas need GPS tracking

by GPS4US 2013-10-07 16:56

The famed gondolas of the Venice, Italy waterways will soon be fitted with GPS monitors to track their locations and increase safety.

The measure is part of a 26-point safety plan commissioned after a German tourist died in an accident in August.

The goal is to improve safety in the crowded waterways after Joachim Vogel was killed when his gondola hit a water taxi. The measure begins on Nov. 4, when 5,000 gondolas will be required to have GPS devices.

“We have no alternative,” said Ugo Bergamo, transport councilor. “We can’t pretend that we don’t have a problem. We intend to reduce the water traffic in crucial parts of the Grand Canal by 50 percent.”

The plan also requires gondolas to cease lining up to serenade tourists.

Now, chances are you don’t own a Gondola. But you may own a boat. If so, we’ve got some amazing chartplotters in our store.
