Cell phone GPS coordinates lead search party astray

by GPS4US 2013-08-15 14:58

If you’re debating whether you should choose a GPS unit or smartphone for your navigation needs, you may want to take a look at this.

Inaccurate cell phone GPS coordinates recently delayed a search party in New Hampshire. Fish and Game conservation officers say that, when three men called 911 for help after becoming lost and disoriented, they used their phone to provide their location on a Mount Monadnock trail. However, an erroneous reading led searchers astray. The men were finally found about two hours later.

The men, luckily, weren’t harmed in their ordeal.

Cell phone GPS apps like Apple Maps and Google Maps use area cell phone towers to provide readings. Specific GPS units receive their coordinates from the 24-satellite system orbiting the earth, making them much more accurate.

If you’re hitting the trail, Garmin has dozens of handheld units that are perfect for hiking. Among our favorites are the Dakota 20 and the Montana 650t. No matter which device you choose, just remember to be safe.
