Fitness trackers prove a market force

by GPS4US 2013-10-09 15:40

As the personal navigation device market suffers, fitness tracking devices have soared in popularity.

That’s good news for GPS makers like Garmin, which is going all-in on new products that can accurately and completely track a user’s workout or adventure. Recently, the GPS giant announced its Edge Touring and Edge Touring Plus cycling computes, and the VIRB and VIRB Elite wearable action cameras.

Wearable devices are leading this fitness craze. According to researchers at the Berg Institute, sales of smart watches and fitness trackers hit 8.3 million in 2012, more than double 2011’s output of 3.1 million. With a compound annual growth rate of 50.6 percent, shipments of wearable devices could reach 64 million in 2017.

As smart watches evolve – giving users every bit of fitness and navigation information they could ever imagine on their wrist – they figure to take a prominent place in the market. Garmin’s golf-centered Approach series is one example, and the Forerunner series is an invaluable training watch that can measure heart rate, weight and body fat percentage.

Berg Insight suggests that wearable devices will become more than just smartphone accessories and evolve into stand-alone tools.
