GPS Grade Control System helps rebuild the contour of Pacific storm flooded Playa Del Rey beach

by Rus Abz 2011-09-01 12:24

Pacific Playa Del Rey Beach FloodedThere was a reason for the severe weather active advisory this night reading the High Surf Advisory or US Severe Weather and the Tropical Weather notification for Hurricane Katia North Atlantic, Invest 93 North Atlantic, Invest 94 North Atlantic and Tropical Storm Talas Western Pacific. The Pacific Ocean waves in our neighborhood here at Playa Del Rey this morning confirmed the weather advisory is right on target, the waves reached far into the sand beach washing away hundreds of tons of sand. The team of  bulldozers, heavy trucks, Track-Type Tractors and Motor Graders were busy working hard to re-create the beach level and erect the barrier for the Pacific waves.

Numerous heavy machines worked as a well oiled synchronized team thanks to the operators and for the coast guard team collaboration and communication GPS enabled control and monitoring system. The new and revolutionary navigational, communication and leveling solution including cross slope, sonic, laser, GPS, and ATS technology are simplifying the task of erecting the sand barricade to prevent further Pacific Ocean storm waves eating and flooding of the Playa Del Rey beach contour. The Caterpillar (NYSE:CAT) AccuGrade GPS Grade Control System is a high technology machine control and guidance system that allows dozer operators to grade sand and soil with increased accuracy, without the need for survey stakes. The GPS grade control system uses the digital design data, in-cab operator guidance features and automatic blade controls to help the dozer operator achieve grade faster, meaning higher productivity, lower operating costs, and greater profitability.

Pacific Ocean flood waves

Miles of sand along the beach touched by the echo spread by Hurricane Katia and Storm Talas reaching Del Rey as Pacific waves wash the sand away, for the truck, dozer and grader team synchronized work, if not the help of grade control system and experienced team operators, are not easy to maintain during flood to keep the consistent grade and level of the beach. It is difficult, labor intensive, and challenging for even the most experienced operators. The new grading and leveling GPS enabled technology can make the task easier by combining digital design data, in-cab operator guidance features, and automatic blade controls. One example is Caterpillar's AccuGrade Grade Control System which actually enhances grading accuracy and virtually eliminates the need for survey stakes. The GPS enabled truck, bulldozer and other heavy machinery control & guidance technology can increase productivity by while reducing the site maintenance costs. The GPS enabled high technology is factory integrated, sensor-independent, and features a suite of products outfitting of bulldozers with GPS technology as another example. The motor graders and bulldozer operations are becoming more efficient and accurate using the global positioning system (GPS) and application software, making hard tasks of repairing sand beach shape and protecting from further flooding easier.
