Garmin to create engineering jobs in Oregon

by GPS4US 2013-12-10 17:58

Taking advantage of a state incentive program, Garmin is bringing jobs to Oregon.

The GPS giant announced Monday its subsidiary, Garmin AT INC., which builds aircraft navigation
equipment, will expand its operation in Salem, Ore., and create at least 65 new software and
engineering positions, the Associated Press reports.

They’ll also build a $14 million, 66,000 square foot facility close to their existing building. Garmin
already has a considerable footprint in Salem, employing about 400 people in two locations.

The expansion comes as the state of Oregon lends Garmin $500,000 that will be forgiven as long as the
company creates and maintains at least 65 jobs that pay 150 percent of the statewide average wage.

The jobs will average a salary of about $56,000 per year.

“Those engineering jobs are well above family wage job criteria,” said Salem Mayor Anna Peterson.
“They’re the kind of jobs that bring stability to the community.”

Garmin hopes to open its new facility by January 2015.
