How to hide Geocache and not get arrested

by GPS4US 2013-09-06 13:34

The reality is, we live in a complicated society. So, when you’re hiding a geocache, it makes sense to take a few precautions to ensure your cache isn’t mistaken for something more nefarious like, say, a bomb.

Our friends at Geocaching.com asked a few law enforcement officials about what geocache hiders can do to be sure their package won’t be considered a suspicious object. The findings are pretty interesting. It turns out, with a little bit of common sense, it’s not hard to make a geocache look like, well, a geocache.

The blog entry has loads of geo-advice, and you can read the whole thing here.

Officers suggested that, if you’re hiding your cache in a public place, be sure to get the landowner’s permission first. Also, take a picture of your cache and give it to the owner so they know what it looks like. Further, mark is as a geocache using the official geocache sticker.

Whatever you do, don’t mark your cache with words like “Caution,” “Danger,” “Beware,” or any other word that might cause alarm. And, to give the cops another avenue of information, write your phone number on the cache in big numbers.

We love geocaching, and we want to make sure it’s safe and free of suspicion. If you’re looking to grab new equipment for your next find, check out our line of geocaching devices.
