NFL to monitor players with GPS devices during games, practices

by GPS4US 2013-08-14 17:38

In the past month, we’ve reported on the Buffalo Bills and the Atlanta Falcons using unobtrusive GPS units to monitor their players during training camp.

Now the NFL is hopping on the GPS wagon. The league announced that it will require all of its 32 teams – including the Bills and Falcons – to wear the GPS units in some games and practices this year.

The devices will monitor data like speed, distance traveled and field locations.

The league won’t share the data with teams right away, but its Competition Committee will help figure out the best use and distribution method for the information.

Using GPS units in practice is nothing new. The Bills have been doing it for about a year. It gives teams more thorough information on their players’ workload, helping prevent new injuries and aggravation to existing injuries.
