Reduction in GLONASS funding concerns some in Russia

by GPS4US 2013-08-06 17:43

Some in Russia are concerned about the nation’s planned reduction in GLONASS funding. GLONASS is Russia’s satellite navigation system, and the reduction of funds will bring the orbital grouping system below acceptable levels, according to a Roscosmos article. “(This could) lead to the loss of confidence of the international community in the GLONASS system and, consequently, to a reduction in its use globally,” said Vladimir Gutenev, the first deputy chairman on the Committee on Industry. “Russia will lose a strategic global instrument of political and economic prestige.” GLONASS stands alongside The United States’ GPS as working navigation systems while Europe is developing Galileo and China is developing COMPASS. Russia’s proposal is to slash funding of the state space program by 11.7 billion rubles in 2014, 13.5 billion in 2015 and 40 billion in 2016. According to news agency ITAR-TASS, the State Duma is recommending the government of the Russian Federation maintains funding of federal space programs.
