Smartphone maps may give Arkansas drivers a headache with new I-49 name

by GPS4US 2014-04-23 09:37

Arkansas drivers who use their cell phone for GPS may find a bit of a problem beginning this week.

Arkansas’ I-540 changed to I-49 Wednesday in anticipation of a project linking a highway from Canada to
New Orleans.

The only issue is that it may take a while before smartphone GPS update the name in their maps. An app
developer says cellphone programming may not stay up to date. And it will take a system update for I-49
to find its way into phones.

No word on how the change will affect handheld GPS, but Garmin makes it a habit to change maps on a
regular basis.

Plus, any Garmin model labeled “LM” provides free lifetime to users. That includes the newly released
zumo 590LM  , the dezl 760LMT  or the nuvi 1350LMT , among many others. Also note that the “T’ in the dezl
and nuvi names means those models also get lifetime traffic updates.

Still, Arkansas drivers may find themselves with an extra bit of confusion for the foreseeable future.
