Trackloging Los Angeles and Santa Monica with Garmin nuvi 1490LMT in hand

by Rus Abz 2011-05-31 11:15

Garmin nuvi 1490lmt has large touch screenIt happens unexpectedly - once in awhile we have to switch from laid back car driver to a busy pedestrian. It happened to me after I moved from Dallas, where you would not see anyone walking, only driving, to Los Angeles (where its all about walking, skateboarding and biking) and I have found myself in the busy shoes of metro-bus or subway-rail mostly walking (sometimes biking) and yet inexperienced urbanite.

That is how my not much used before Christmas gift, a sleek Nuvi from Garmin (GRMN) became my pedestrian rescue "wind vane" so to speak. At first my heart rate monitor reading went up as i am not a high tech geek, but, after couple of minutes chatting to friendly folks at online store cleared my fear as my Nuvi was ready to go right out of the box, with no subscription/hidden fees or expiration dates, preloaded with lifetime map and traffic topo. Moreover, there is one pedestrian-friendly feature in particular that I enjoyed. It reminds me mouse-trail tail feature enabled on a PC for easy tracking the tiny mouse cursor. Same way switching "on" the Nuvi Tracklog feature reveals a differently colored line which trails the position of little fella walking on the screen.

Watching Tracklog curving around the cursor line arrow lets you see where you have just been and which way you are moving, like you watch a speedboat path on the waters, which helps keep proper orientation, and it is as intuitive as you see yourself walking streets with colored tracks left behind you.
